  • What is Apocrypha, why were they included in 1611 KJV, then later removed?

The Apocrypha is a selection of books which were published in the original 1611 King James Bible. These apocryphal books were positioned between the Old and New Testament (it also contained maps and geneologies). The apocrypha was a part of the KJV for 274 years until being removed in 1885 A.D. A portion of these books were called deuterocanonical books by some entities, such as the Catholic church. –King James Bible Online Below are Excerpts from Pastor Mike Schreib, BBCI The Apocrypha are found in the Old Testament of a Catholic Bible which are not found in everybody else's Bible and I’ll list them for you the names of those books are Baruch, the book of Judith, first and second Maccabees, the book of Tobit, the book of Sirach or sometimes called the Song of Sirach or Ecclesiasticus and the alleged proverbs written by King Solomon they call that the Book of Wisdom, but those seven books are found in the Old testament of a Catholic Bible but not found in a Protestant Bible or anybody else's Bible. In 1546 the Roman Catholic Council of Trent in Italy, the largest Church Council they ever convened to define their doctrines and to establish what it was Catholics believe or were supposed to believe and to affirm the authority of the church over the lives of men, but in 1546 on April the 8th after one of their sessions, they summarize their books of the bible like this: "...but if anyone receive not as sacred and canonical the said books entire with all of their parts as they have been used to be read in the Catholic Church and then they list all of those books including the Apocrypha books and as they are contained in the Old Latin Vulgate editions and if anyone knowingly and deliberately condemn the traditions of four said let him be an anathema or accursed..." The word Apocrypha means hidden or questionable, naturally you can see the Catholics wouldn't want to call their books by that name they prefer another name another term called “Deuterocanonical”, the Book of Deuteronomy means “the second giving of the law”, so the word Deuterocanonical means a second group of books that should also be in the Old Testament canon or the Old Testament collection of bible books so they call it Deuterocanonical meaning extra books that should also be in the scriptures. A Bible Believing Christian rejects these books despite the Catholic Church's threat of cursing you, because number one, no New Testament writer quoted from them and we'll try to make that clear. Number two, Jesus rejected them when he defined what the Old Testament canon books. Number three they teach false doctrines such as Pantheism, one of their books, Wisdom of Solomon 12:1 “For thine incorruptible Spirit is in all things. “ That’s Pantheism! That the Spirit of God resides in all things and all objects both animate and inanimate, they teach or they commend one man for committing suicide in the history of Israel. They also teach or endorse witchcraft in the book of Tobit 6:5-8. They also teach the subject or endorse the subject of Purgatory in the 2 Maccabees chapter 12. Every Orthodox Rabbi today rejects those books from being part of the Hebrew scriptures and the Roman Catholic church officially cursed Jesus Christ by their statement. I'll give you the references to support that statement. Note: In the 1611 KJV Bible, the publishers indicated which Books are God inspired scriptures by giving it a title header above each page of the Old and New Testament, these may act as a brief background or description of each chapters of the Bible, while in Apocrypha, each page only has the header named “Apocrypha” indicating that the book is not God inspired without explicitly mentioning it and unlike the Catholic bibles which inserts the Apocrypha books within the Old Testament, in 1611 KJV Bibles, these are segregated in between the Old and New Testament with its own section, not adding any books to the Old and New Testament of the Bible. Related: What about the Apocrypha in the KJV 1611? Now in the Old Testament or the Hebrew scriptures says we would refer to them when we're dealing with Jewish people, but in the Hebrew scriptures their books of their Bible begin with Genesis and they end with Second Chronicles, they have the same 39 books in their Old Testament that we have in ours they're just arranged in a different order you have to keep that in mind, but here Jesus says in Matthew 23:35. Matthew 23:35 King James Version “That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.” Abel (Book of Genesis) to Zacharias / Zechariah (Second Chronicles), no inclusion of Apocrypha can be found in that bracket, Jesus bracketed what the Old Testament or what the Jews considered to be the Old Testament scriptures. Come also if you will to the Book of Luke 24:44. Luke 24:44 King James Version “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.” According to an Orthodox Jew the Old Testament or the Hebrew scriptures contain three parts they contain: the Law, they contain the Prophets and they contain the Psalms sometimes that's referred to as the writings and that section of the of the Hebrew scriptures which are referred to as the Psalms are not just the Book of Psalms, the Book of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon, those five books are what are referred to as the Psalms and at least in this reference, but no Apocrypha can be found in those three categories the Apocrypha books which alleged to cover history of Israel that spanned somewhere between 500 BC and in the time of Christ, but no Jew accepted them as part of the scripture in Jesus’ day and no Orthodox Jew or Rabbi considers them part of the scripture today. Law of Moses or Pentateuch or Five Books of Moses Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy Book of the Prophets Historical: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi Book of Psalms Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon So when the Catholic Church says that anyone who rejects any part of what they call the books of the Bible let him be accursed they are the only church that officially cursed Jesus Christ in so doing because Jesus Christ rejected those books when He declared what the bracket of the Old Testament books of the Bible ought to be. The Westminster Confession of Faith held by Protestantism which I happen to have a copy of here they list their books of the bible without the Apocrypha and they say the books commonly called Apocrypha not being of divine inspiration are no part of the canon of the scripture and therefore are of no authority in the Church of God nor to be otherwise approved or made use of than other human writings and this was published in Westminster Abbey during the year 1643-1648 they also say a couple of other very interesting things all things in scripture are not alike plain in themselves nor light clear unto all yet those things which are necessary to be known believed and observed for salvation are so clearly propounded and opened in some place of scripture or other that not only the learned but the unlearned in a due use of the ordinary means may attain unto a sufficient understanding of them in other words you don't have to be well educated all you have to do is be diligent in reading the scripture and comparing scripture with scripture and God will show you what they mean. All right here's a book called the Biblical Basis for the Catholic Faith and I mentioned this to you I found it on one of my many adventures at thrift stores not long ago 2005 written by a man named John Salza published by our Sunday visitor press, they publish a Catholic newspaper every week that goes throughout the entire country probably around the world in other languages and it says John Salza is a well-respected Catholic Apologist and says he's also the creator of scripturecatholic.com one of the most popular Catholic apologetic sites on the web and the back cover says there's commonly held misconception that the catholic church made up a lot of its teachings how do you debunk that myth if you're a devout Catholic but your knowledge of scripture is spotty and by the way most Catholic apologists or people trying to defend their faith make that concession they make that admission that: “us Catholics were not used to studying our Bibles as often as Protestants do”, “we don't read and study our scriptures the way our non-Catholic friends do”. They actually admit that in number of books that I have right up front though let's get that out of the way, well why is that? Let’s not just pass or move on, let's dwell on that for a minute, why is that? There's got to be a reason why they don't. No authority, there's no authority! What drove Martin Luther out of the Catholic Church was he began to read the Bible on his own right and he learned that Salvation was by Grace and not by works and so and I’ve made up a copy of page 16 of this book and he deals with the some text, some passages in the so-called Apocrypha books. The first, John Salza list a number of instances where supposedly the Apocrypha is being referred to or quoted from or alluded to by the writers or the speakers in the New Testament and thus you know if that's true then who are we to reject those books and say that they don't belong in the Bible and the couple of examples he gives the first one we'll deal with two of these today that Jesus calls his father, the Lord of heaven and Earth there in Matthew 11:25 quoting from the book of Tobit 7:16. In their in their bible their so-called Book of Tobit 7:16 and she said: “She went and made the bed in this room as he had ordered, and took her daughter to it. She wept over her, then wiped away her tears and said, 'Courage, daughter! May the Lord of heaven turn your grief to joy! Courage, daughter!' And she went out.” And from that I guess we're supposed to believe that Jesus was quoting from that verse in the book of Matthew 11:25. That's the word Jesus said: “At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.” And the writer John Salza said that Jesus was quoting from the Catholic Apocrypha Book of Tobit, well the Book of Tobit doesn't say “Lord of heaven and earth”, it simply said “Lord of heaven”, that's not an exact quote, it's not an exact match furthermore the expression Lord or Lord God of heaven is found numerous places in the Old Testament. So the author of this book is really grasping at straws to say that Jesus was quoting from the book of Tobit when the phrase Jesus uttered is not even an identical match with the one found in that Apocrypha reference, but he's really grasping at straws and you see the lists (see full video) that I gave you I presume this is the best example he has to offer that's why he starts his list off with it maybe not we'll see as we go. Let's go to the second one on found list there that's Luke chapter 1 verse 52. Luke 1:52 King James Version “He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.” And the author says that Mary is following or quoted from the Song of Sirach 10:14, when she says the Lord has put down the mighty from their seats and exalted him of low degree they'll say that Mary is quoting a phrase found in that particular book in the Catholic Bible when she utters those words that God has raised up a lonely handmaiden or put down those that are mighty and certainly God certainly knows how to do that and elevated someone of low degree if that were the only phrase anywhere in the Old Testament books including apocrypha books that was similar to what Mary said. They might have a case but it's not and so they don't let me show you, why I say that come back to the book of first Samuel chapter 2. 1 Samuel 2:1-8 King James Version 1 And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. 2 There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. 3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. 4 The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength. 5 They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. 6 The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. 7 The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. 8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and he hath set the world upon them. I come forward to the book of Job in chapter 5, here job's friends are trying to offer their reasoning as to why Job's suffering why he's afflicted by God and how he ought to look at it what do you ought to do about it. Notice there verses 10 and 11 his friend says about God who giveth rain upon the earth and sendeth waters upon the fields to set up on high those that below that those which mourn may be exalted to safety Come to Psalm 113 and begin there in verse 5. Psalm 113:5-8 King James Version 5 Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, 6 Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth! 7 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; 8 That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people. The whole idea that God raises men up and he brings men down that God honours the lowly or he brings down the mighty and those that are proud those that are in power and rich verse nine of this chapter of this Psalm “He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.” Well if you want to push that farther and push that on to the Virgin Mary and say that was a prophecy of her, Hannah and Sarah were both early types of the virgin birth of the Lord Jesus by Mary, they weren't a perfect match but you see the miraculous birth that God blessed them with Sarah (mother of Isaac) all beyond the years of normal childbearing and Hannah (mother of Prophet Samuel) thinking she'd never have a child. God answered their respective prayers, He gave both of them sons in their old age when they're beyond the normal expectation of having ever having children, God gave them children nonetheless and they were types if you will or foreshadows of the Virgin Birth the miraculous birth of Jesus by Mary and so it's only logical that Mary would echo the words of Hannah that God had hearkened to the words of his handmaiden and he elevated the lowly and just as he's able to bring down the mighty I want you to come back one verse second Samuel chapter five. Notice there verse 12. 2 Samuel 5:12 “And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.” Yes, it was the LORD who exalted him king over Israel, it wasn't anything he had earned or deserved, he didn't expect to receive that kind of honor and would otherwise not have received it other than God decided to give it to him and brought him up and he brought King Saul down and some common theme found in the word of God, is that God is the one who has the right, the prerogative to raise kings up or to bring kings down, to exalt people of low degree or to bring people down who are proud and mighty and a great reputation he was able to humble the king in the Book of Daniel drove him out of out of the kingdom went out and lived outdoors for you know seven years and became like a wild man his nails grew like a bird's claws and his hair and so forth and he went out of his mind. God's able to humble the mighty and to raise up the humble. You cannot say now if the reference in the book of the Song of Sirach, if that was the only reference anywhere in any scripture book that the Catholic Church could say Mary was quoting from them, they might have a point but since it's a recurring theme recognized by the righteous and the unrighteous alike, that it's God's power to elevate or to bring down, then they really don't have a case, plus there was nothing in that passage of Mary’s speech that said as it is written. Recall when you read the New Testament how often you see the phrase according as it is written in the book of such and such or as it is written, as it is written and then God, then the story quotes from the Old Testament book, but not so in these cases where the guy says someone's quoting from the Apocrypha books. It's necessary for you to see what's contained in them so you have some idea of what a Catholic is supposed to believe or why his views differ from yours and mine sometimes when you read these books by Catholic apologists and if you're not reading your Bible to see if it indeed it is, so you can be very confounded, confused by what they say, you can be confused into thinking hey maybe they aren't quoting from those books when you go and actually look at the references in their Bible you'll see that no such thing is taking place. Key Takeaways: What is Apocrypha? Apocrypha, (from Greek apokryptein, “to hide away”), in biblical literature, works outside an accepted canon of scripture. These apocryphal books were positioned between the Old and New Testament (it also contained maps and geneologies). Often called “Deuterocanonical books” by the Catholic Church Why were they included in 1611 KJV Bible? Due to the Decree in the 4th Session of the General Council of Trent Are these God inspired texts? No, because no one quoted from these books in the New Testament Jesus Christ outlines which books are considered in the Old Testament as canon Matthew 23:35, Luke 24:44 Promotes false and pagan doctrines such as Pantheism, Purgatory, Witchcraft, etc. Publishers implicitly showed that it’s not God inspired by not providing a header with short description above each page like in the Old and New Testament Books and only says “Apocrypha”, and are segregated from the Old and the New Testament, not adding to those 2 Testament books. And for the same reasons as above that Apocrypha was removed from KJV Bibles in 1885. How to go to Heaven? Missionary Evangelist Robert Breaker talks about the Plea Bargain that Jesus made with the Judge and the Law, and how you can be PARDONED or JUSTIFIED if you accept that plea deal made on YOUR BEHALF! • Nothing but the Blood

Hebrews 9:22 King James Version “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” Why is “Blood” important in the Bible? We know that we all have sinned and come short to the glory of God as said in Romans 3:23 and that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). The only payment for sin is taking away the life from the living, and where is life in our body? It’s found in the blood (Leviticus 17:11), so someone has to die in our place and shed blood to pay for our sins. And there are passages in the Bible which tells us that the only way to get save is through the blood. In the Old Testament, when Adam and Eve sinned, God had to sacrifice an animal to die in their place and to clothe them (Genesis 3:21), so every time that man sin they have to offer a sacrificial lamb in order for God to forgive their sins which only lasts until they sin again after the sacrifice had already been made. During the time of Moses at the Lord’s Passover, the Israelites painted their 2 side posts and the upper door post with blood so that they will avoid the last plague of Egypt – the death of the firstborn (in Exodus 12). Afterwards when they fled from Egypt they created the Ark of the Covenant where they perform burnt and sin offering to God by sacrificing animals according to the law. It would take 1,500 years from the time of Moses for God to provide the perfect sacrifice for our sins. God can only accept a perfect and sinless person into Heaven, and no one can live up to God’s standards so God had to sacrifice His only begotten Son for the forgiveness of sins. Matthew 26:28 King James Version “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” 2 Corinthians 5:21 King James Version “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Jesus Christ shed His blood for all sinners so that we may be made righteous in the eyes of God, for those that believed on Jesus Christ, and His blood atonement of our sins. Romans 3:24-26 King James Version 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and put our faith in His blood for the remission of our sins. ═══════ ༺ ♰ ༻ ═══════ Romans 5:9 King James Version “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” ══════════════════ Hope this may be a blessing to the readers. • Heavy Yoke of the Law vs Easy Yoke of Grace

Matthew 11:28-30 King James Version 28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. The Salvation of the Old Testament is different from the New Testament, in order for them to be saved back then they must have faith in God and they also have to follow the Ten Commandments, the Mosaic laws, God’s ordinances and they have to sacrifice animals as burnt and sin offering to God for their remission of sins, but these are just temporary, once they sin again then the sacrifice are made none effect and they’ll go to hell if they died in their sins. Salvation back then is a lot harder compared to the New Testament Galatians 3:10-11 King James Version 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: This is relates to. 2 Corinthians 5:21 King James Version "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." Jesus Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by bearing all of our sins so God when He sees us who believed on Jesus Christ for our Salvation, He will only see the righteousness of Jesus Christ in us because of the remission of our sins through His blood. Matthew 26:28 King James Version For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Hebrews 9:22 King James Version And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Romans 3:25 King James Version Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; After the death of the testator which is Jesus Christ, our Salvation now is Faith alone on Jesus Christ while we’re still in the Age of Grace before the Great Tribulation where Salvation goes back to Faith + Works. Galatians 3:22-25 King James Version 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. Romans 3:27-28 King James Version 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Truly Jesus Christ’s yoke is easy and His burden is light, in order to be saved today one must believe on Jesus Christ for Salvation Acts 13:39 King James Version “And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” Acts 15:10-11 King James Version 10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. Romans 10:9-10 King James Version 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. ═══════ ༺ ♰ ༻ ═══════ Galatians 2:21 King James Version “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” ══════════════════ Hope this may be a blessing to the readers. • GOD as a Balanced Being

In this lesson, we will discuss God as a balanced being. You must remember that although God is loving, merciful, and faithful, at the same time the Bible reveals Him as just, holy, and righteous. Many Christians today have a lopsided view of God. Some overemphasize His love and forget that He is just and holy at the same time. Now, it is the love of God that allows God to forgive sin and to show mercy to a repentant sinner, but it is the holiness and justice of God that demands that sin must be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.” We read that every transgression in the Old Testament received a “just recompense of reward.” We must get a balanced view of God. The emotions that show up in man are small, depraved counterfeits, or counterparts, of the original nature that is perfect and holy and righteous. The liberal and the atheist, of course, have trouble with this because they figure this way (figuring from the depths of their depraved natures): “Well, surely God is better than man, so if man hates, God wouldn’t hold a grudge against anybody. God can’t hate anybody.” They figure, “Well, if man can forgive an enemy, then certainly, God can forgive a man anything.” This, of course, is a perverted view of the majesty of God. Every attribute of man is magnified a thousand times in the Lord. God, to be a balanced God, has to have a balanced nature; God Almighty has to be a perfect being. His jealousy has to be perfect. His love has to be perfect. His righteousness has to be perfect. If God were a human being, He would be completely frustrated. God is not like a human being. God is God and His holiness is perfect. His righteousness is perfect. His justice is perfect. God Is Holy All right, first of all, God is holy. You can’t imagine a God who can be anything but perfect and holy. If He is not perfectly holy, then He’s not God. To be holy, of course, means to be free from all defilement—to be pure. God is absolutely pure. The Bible says in 1 John 1:5, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” Habakkuk 1:13 says, “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity.” In Exodus 15:11, we read, “Who is like unto thee, O Lord...glorious in holiness.” In 1 Samuel 2:2, “There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee.” In Isaiah 6:3, the seraphims are crying, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts.” Simon Peter says in 1 Peter 1:16, “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” This holiness of God separates Him from man. “Ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ,” Ephesians 2:13. The only way that man can approach a holy God is through shedding of blood, for “the life of the flesh is in the blood,” and God is life, and God gave life to man. There is not a heathen in the darkest parts of Africa or Asia who doesn’t know that “without shedding of blood is no remission” of sins (Heb. 9:22). You have to go to college to unlearn that basic, universal truth. God is holy in the Bible. The God of the Bible hates sin. His holy wrath will punish sin. And this explains Isaiah 53:10 where the Bible says, “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him,” (Jesus Christ). Isaiah 53:5 says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” God is holy. The God of the Bible is not the god of Buddhism and Hinduism. The God of the Bible is holy and does not tolerate sin. The God of the Bible does not call evil “good” and good “evil.” The God of the Bible never speaks about “values clarification” and “relative situation ethics.” That is the work of the Christ-rejecting, hell-bound, fallen, Adamic nature as it seeks to set up its own standards to replace God’s standards because God’s standards are too high. God is holy. You say, “Well, how in the world can I become holy like God?” You can not apart from a sinless Saviour who died in your place. (Like they say out in the world, “No way, man, no way.”) God Is Love All right, secondly, God is love. We read in 1 John 4:8, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” This is not only a verb that says God loves, but it is also a noun—“for God is love.” If God lives in a person’s heart by conversion, then they must love Him, for He is indwelt by love. John said in 1 John 4:7, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God.” Love is a desire for, and a delight in, the welfare of the one on whom the love is bestowed. Love is giving. True love is even love for your enemy—Matthew 5:46, “For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?” A hippie who loves the hippie, groupie, moonie and the communees and the communists, and hates “the establishment” is a rascal. Christ said, “Love your enemies...pray for them which despitefully use you,” Matthew 5:44, “bless, and curse not,” Romans 12:14. If all you can love are the folks that are in agreement with you, you “ain’t worth shooting.” The love of God is manifested toward the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and believers in particular. The Bible says of the unbeliever in John 3:36, “He that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” The Bible says about the religious man, that is counting on his religion and his sacraments to save him, that he is alone in the world, “dead in trespasses and sins,” without hope, “without God,” and that he is by nature, by birth, a child of wrath, read Ephesians 2. The Bible says in John 16:27, “For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.” “For God so loved the world” (past tense) “that he gave his only begotten Son” (past tense). This caused God to work out a plan of salvation to give men an opportunity to escape wrath and damnation. God is a loving Father and manifests His love to the Christian by chastening. “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth,” Hebrews 12:6. Then love, in the Bible, is defined as giving. “For God so loved the world, that he gave....” It is very possible for you to give without loving, but, you cannot love without giving. In every love affair on the face of this earth, there is an element of selfishness on the part of one or both parties. You haven’t got one love affair on the face of this earth where somebody isn’t trying to get something for themselves. And this means simply this: If you’ve missed the love of the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, you have missed the greatest love on the face of this earth. Christ loved you enough to die for your sins, and you have no other friend who would love you like that. God Is Faithful “God is faithful.” “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord,” 1 Corinthians 1:9. Deuteronomy 7:9 says, “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God.” This word “faithful” means somebody who can be safely trusted, who is reliable and dependable. God is faithful, for He is honest and never changes. His “faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds,” says Psalm 36:5. “All his works are done in truth,” David says in Psalm 33:4. God’s faithfulness is manifested in His keeping of His promises and in His fulfilling every word that He has spoken. God is unchangeable, for as Balaam said back in Numbers 23:19, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” Yes, He will. God will keep every promise to protect, assist, and guide His child in need. Some of the greatest promises in the word of God, held out to the believer, are so great that they are called “exceeding great and precious promises” by Simon Peter in 2 Peter 1:4. I will only quote a few of them, but you can see, by the checkbook that the Lord has given you to fill out, that a believer in Jesus Christ who has been born again has access to riches to which no unsaved man has access, no matter how high he is in his religiosity. Check Number One—“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus,” Philippians 4:19. Check Number Two—“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me,” Philippians 4:13. Check Number Three—“He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ,” Philippians 1:6. Check Number Four—The Lord is faithful, “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me,” Hebrews 13:6. Check Number Five—“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work,” 2 Corinthians 9:8. Check Number Six—“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord,” Romans 8:38–39. And finally, Check Number Seven—“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose,” Romans 8:28. “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself,” 2 Timothy 2:13. And Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” God Is Merciful Moses says in Deuteronomy 4:31, “(For the Lord thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee.” A little bit later He did put Israel aside, but notice the statement is that He “will not forsake thee” in the sense of if you are willing to go by what He said, then He will keep His promise to you and will not forsake you and will show mercy. Notice that instead of inflicting pain and death every time as a punishment for sin, the Lord is merciful and spares the sinner and gives the sinner many blessings, health, comforts and earthly joys; these are given to both saved and lost. And yet, in all His sparing and all His mercy, the Lord says in Proverbs 29:1, “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” Throughout all, God’s mercy is the constant warning that although God will put up with some things temporarily and be merciful to you, He won’t put up with it forever. His mercy “endures forever” in the sense that God keeps His word and God will spare the saved sinner, but His mercy ceases in hell, unless you can call a lake of fire a mercy for people who have rejected Jesus Christ. God is sovereign and can choose to whom He desires to show His mercy. Romans 9:15 says, “For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” The mercy of God can be shown to the multitudes. Exodus 20:6 says, “And shewing mercy unto thousands of them [then here is His condition] that love me, and keep my commandments.” In this day and age, God has chosen to show His mercy to people who come to Jesus Christ and trust Him as their salvation. He may allow His mercy to extend generally to an unsaved man, but His mercy in eternity (eternal mercy, eternal heaven, eternal life, and eternal joy) only comes to the man who does what God told him to do. And what God told you to do is to quit trusting your own righteousness and trust His righteousness. If your god only has one side to him—love and mercy—you haven’t got the God of the Bible. You have not got a holy god. You’ve got a pervert. Do you know why? Because if all he has is love and mercy, he has to love fornication, adultery, perversion, deviation, bestiality, blackmail, embezzlement, lying, killing, swearing, cheating, and extortion. He has to love them with the same degree that he loves honesty, purity, decency, courage and righteousness. There is that great, big, synthesized, integrated, passive, relative god. There he is. He’s a freak. That is not the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. That is not the God Who reveals Himself in the word of God. That is some other god. That is some other gospel. That has nothing to do with the revelation of God concerning Himself. That is a lost sinner trying to fashion God after the image in which man would like to create Him, so that God won’t interfere with his devilment. Again, Psalm 32:10, “He that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.” Then we learn something. We learn that even an unsaved, Christ-rejecting, hell-bound sinner can experience the mercy of God in this life. God’s mercy is one of His communicable attributes which He can communicate to man. However, when it comes to eternal mercy (the mercy of the Lord from everlasting to everlasting), this only occurs at Calvary in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ who is “God...manifest in the flesh.” God is determined to show everlasting mercy upon the sinner who trusts His Son and receives His Son. When the penitent sinner comes to Jesus for forgiveness, he claims no merit, but he throws himself upon the mercy of the Lord. When the unsaved man comes to God for salvation, he doesn’t come for justice. He comes for mercy. God is merciful. There is not a case where a man ever came to God in fear, trusting God’s righteousness and God’s goodness, that God ever turned a man down. And the Lord Jesus Christ held out his open invitation to sinners in John 6:37, “him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” For two thousand years, the Lord Jesus Christ has been standing at the crossroads of eternity inviting men to come to Him. He says in Matthew 11:28–30, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” He said to a certain group of self-righteous religious people, “And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life,” John 5:40. The last invitation in the Bible before the prayer for the Second Coming of Christ says, “the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely,” Revelation 22:17. God is merciful. God Is Just God is just. Moses said in Deuteronomy 32:4, “God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.” David said in Psalm 19:9, “The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.” The God of the universe is just and righteous and will mete out just judgment to each individual. Abraham said in Genesis 18:25, “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” He certainly will. If you want justice, you will get it. If you want God to square accounts with you and give you what you have coming to you, I’ll guarantee you He will do it. That Bible says that in the day of judgment “He shall reward every man according to his works” (Matt. 16:27). And He said in Romans 2:1, 5, 6, “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things...But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds.” Solomon said, “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil,” Ecclesiastes 12:14. God will bring you into judgment—“whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” God is just. He will make no mistakes. Isaiah 45:21, “there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour.” God, being just, righteous, and holy, must act in a manner that is just, righteous, upright, and holy; and He will. If your sins deserve hell, the Lord knows it. If pitting your puny self-righteousness against the righteousness of God is a crime worse than adultery or murder, I’ll tell you somebody who knows it, if your pastor doesn’t know it. God does! If your standing up and shaking your fist in the face of God Almighty and bragging about your Golden Rule and your Ten Commandments, while you were trying to prove that your righteousness was as good as the righteousness of Jesus Christ, so that you wouldn’t have to trust him merits a lake of fire, don’t worry, you will make it. First Samuel 2:3 says, “the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.” God’s nature of character leads Him to do that which is right at all times, and God, as the Just One, will be the final Judge of all things. Notice 1 Kings 8:32, “Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.” Notice also Revelation 20:12–15, “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Conclusion So we learn from our lesson on God as a balanced being that God is holy, God is love, God is faithful, God is merciful, God is just, and that “our God is a consuming fire” (Deut. 4:24 and Heb. 12:29). How can God be loving and still demand holiness at the same time? How can He be merciful and at the same time take care of the guilty sinner? The answer can only be found at Calvary. It can not be found in any system of works on the face of this earth. The answer to the problem can only be found at Calvary. At Golgotha, we find expressed both the wrath of God against sin and the mercy of God toward the guilty sinner. So in speaking of God’s attributes, we learn several things at Calvary. We learn first of all that God loves sinners and wants to save them. We also learn that God desires to justify sinners, knowing that they cannot justify themselves. We learn that God wants to demonstrate toward sinners His absolute, perfect righteousness so that they can see what He requires. We learn that God Himself is willing to take man’s suffering, pain, temptation, sorrow, and sickness in Himself and bear the punishment of the guilty, although He, God Himself, is not guilty. The Bible says in Romans 3:22–23, “There is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” And when it comes to sin, there is no more difference between a doctor and a lawyer than there is between a junkie, a pimp, a prostitute, and a bum. I know that some of you people who were deceived into thinking that your education and your money made you respectable don’t like that, but who cares what you like anyway? I mean, after all, when faced with the absolute truth of the word of God, to what does your opinion amount? Less than nothing. The Bible says that “there is no difference.” Now, if it says that, it means that. The fact that you think you are different because of your education, your money, your social image, or your religious standing is no concern of mine and the Lord is not going to regard it one way or another. The Bible says in Romans 2:11, “For there is no respect of persons with God.” Calvary is common ground. It is ground which levels all men to sinners, and even includes God’s Son as a sinner. You read in your Bible in Isaiah 53:12 that Jesus Christ “was numbered with the transgressors.” When He came to the ministry of John the Baptist where sinners were being immersed and John tried to stop Him, Jesus said, “Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matt. 3:15). He took His place as a sinner in His baptism. He took His place as a sinner on Calvary. And God bless your soul, doctor, reverend, rabbi, father, lawyer (or whatever you call yourself), you will take your place there; or in eternity you will see the other side of God’s face, the side you didn’t believe was there. God is love, but not that kind of sentimental love that gushes over sin. The love of God is holy and just. God hates sin and God will not tolerate it. If you don’t believe it, just keep on like you are going, and you will find out. Source: Theological Studies Vol I - God as a Balanced Being by Dr. Peter S. Ruckman How to go to Heaven?
