How to Pray as Jesus Christ taught us to Pray using A.C.T.S.

Updated: Feb 26

Matthew 6:5-13 King James Version

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Jesus Christ in this passage is teaching us how to pray the right way.

First find a place where you can be alone and not out in the open for God knows the intentions of your heart when you pray whether it’s genuine or just for show.

Jeremiah 17:10 King James Version

“I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”

Second do not use vain repetitions while praying.

Let’s look at the meaning of the word “vain” in the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary

Vain [adjective]

-          Empty; worthless; having no substance, value or importance. 1 Peter 1:18.

1 Peter 1:18 King James Version

“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;”

Which self-proclaimed Christian religion now focuses more on the tradition of men rather than the word of God (King James Bible)? And why are their prayers empty and worthless? For one thing is those prayers don’t focus on God like the Catholic Novenas and the Rosary. Does the Bible teach we should pray to dead saints and Mary? No! The Bible teaches that we should send our prayers to Jesus Christ as He is our sole mediator to God.

1 Timothy 2:5 King James Version

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

There are other verses in the Bible that points to Roman Catholicism as following the traditions of men

Jeremiah 7:18 King James Version

“The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.”

Mark 7:7-9 King James Version

7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Let’s check all the boxes shall we?

 The fathers kindle the fire

Feast for the Queen of Heaven

 Feasts to other gods

 Washing of pots and cups

Rejecting the commandment of God by making graven images or any likeness (statues) in Heaven or in earth, at the same time bowing and praying to these images

Exodus 20:4-5 King James Version

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

What does the Bible says about those who follow the traditions of men and their fathers rather than the words of God?

Matthew 15:8 King James Version

“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

The third part starting in verse 9, Jesus Christ showed us how to pray as He said “After this manner…” not meaning we should repeat the same prayer as He did per word. There are four parts to the prayer and it shows in what way and manner our prayers should be so God can hear us. This way of praying is called A.C.T.S. (A = Adoration, C = Confession, T = Thanksgiving, S = Supplication)

Adoration

“Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”

Start your prayers with praise. Praise God for who He is. Worship him and acknowledge His greatness. This step is important not only to shower God with praise but to align your heart with His. Praise keeps your eyes fixed on God. Starting with a heart full of worship reminds you just who you’re praying to and what great power He has to answer your prayers.

1 Chronicles 29:10-13 King James Version

10 Wherefore David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.

11 Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.

12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.

13 Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.

Psalm 25:8 King James Version

“Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.”

Psalm 63:3-4 King James Version

3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

Revelation 4:8 King James Version

“And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”

Revelation 5:12 King James Version

“Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.”

Confession

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

Tell God you’re sorry for where you’ve fallen short, where your actions haven’t lived up to God’s expectations, where haven’t done something you should have. Then, ask God’s forgiveness and help to do better next time.

2 Chronicles 7:14 King James Version

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Psalm 25:11 King James Version

“For thy name's sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.”

Jeremiah 31:34 King James Version

“And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

1 John 1:4-9 King James Version

4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Thanksgiving

“For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever”

This is a time for prayers of thanks for what God has done. Thank Him for salvation, the many blessings in your life, protection, provision, open doors, opportunities, and His gifts to man.

1 Chronicles 16:34 King James Version

“O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.”

Psalm 100:4-5 King James Version

4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 King James Version

16 Rejoice evermore.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Philippians 4:6-7 King James Version

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Supplication

“Give us this day our daily bread… Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”

Prayers of requests. This is the time to ask God for His divine help to meet your needs or the needs of others, solve problems, work in someone's life, etc.

Ephesians 6:18 King James Version

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”

1 Timothy 2:1-4 King James Version

1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

1 John 5:12-15 King James Version

12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Please note as says in 1 John 5:12-15, in order for God to grant our petition or the very least hear our prayers you first need to receive the free gift of Salvation, otherwise your prayer requests will never reach Him.

1 John 4:5-6 King James Version

5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

You end your prayer by sending it to Jesus Christ in this manner "In this I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, my LORD and Saviour, Amen." because Jesus Christ is our mediator and the one that intercedes for us to GOD.

John 14:6 King James Version

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
